Before You Dig
Best Times to Plant
🌱 Ideal Seasons:
February-April (before summer heat)
September-November (fall root establishment)
☀️ Avoid:
June-August planting (extreme heat stress)
Frozen winter ground
What You'll Need
✔ ATX Trees' healthy container-grown tree
✔ Round-point shovel & pickaxe (for rocky areas)
✔ Hardwood mulch (available at our nurseries)
✔ Hose with slow trickle setting
Step-by-Step Planting Guide
1. Dig the Texas-Tough Hole
For Central Texas Soils:
Width: 3x root ball diameter (our rocky soil needs space)
Depth: Same as container height
Shape: Rough sides (no smooth "post hole digger" walls)
Pro Tip: "In Dripping Springs' limestone, soak the area first to soften soil." - Mike, ATX Trees Planting Manager
2. Prepare Your ATX Trees Specimen
Remove Container: Lay tree sideways, cut pot away
Root Inspection: Gently loosen circling roots
Special Care: For balled-and-burlap trees, remove wire cage
3. Plant Like We Do
Set tree 1-2" higher than surrounding grade
Backfill with native soil only (no amendments)
Build watering berm around drip line
4. Water for Success
First Critical Watering:
Slow trickle until water stands
Let drain, then repeat
Add soil if settling occurs
First Year Care Checklist
Month Task:
1-3Water 2x/week (15 gal)
4-6Reduce to 1x/week
7-12Water deeply every 2 weeks
On going Refresh mulch, check for pests
Troubleshooting:
Leaf Scorch: Increase water frequency
No New Growth: Check for girdling roots
